What Is PCOS?

Polycystic ovary syndrome is a condition that affects hormone levels in a woman’s body. Women who deal with PCOS face difficulty in getting pregnant. PCOS is a condition that produces higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones which in result imbalance their menstrual cycle.1

 

PCOS causes hair growth on the face and body. It can also cause baldness. PCOS leads to long-term health issues like diabetes and heart disease.1

PCOS is a hormonal issue that influences women during their childbearing years (ages 15 to 44). Between 2.2 and 26.7 percent of women in this age group have PCOS. And the worst case scenario is women who suffer from PCOS don’t know they are dealing with it. One study confirms that up to 70 percent of women with PCOS hadn’t been diagnosed.

Reproductive organs of women’s body are affected by PCOS, the organs that produce estrogen and progesterone-hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. The ovaries also generate a small amount of male hormones called androgens.

PCOS affects a woman’s body in the following three ways:

  • Cyst in the ovaries

  • High level of male hormones

  • Irregular or skipped periods

  • Weight Gain

  • Heavy Bleeding

  • Male-pattern baldness

  • Headaches

  • One of the leading cause of infertility

  • Women with PCOS are overweight

  • Sleep apnea becomes a common problem for women who are overweight

  • PCOS can cause Endometrial Cancer.
